Five Guys

Burgers and Fries

Millburn Mall

2933 Vauxhall Rd

Big Baby and I arrived at Five Guys at about 3:28 PM on Sunday afternoon.  We were greeted promptly and began to place our order.  The young woman behind the counter told us that they were cleaning the grill and that we would need to wait ten minutes and asked if that was ok.*  We agreed and ordered a little hamburger with lettuce, tomato, fried onions and mushrooms, a plain hot dog, little fries and a salted caramel milkshake.  Big baby grabbed our peanuts and we found a table.

Comments:  The walls have pretty patterns.  The milkshakes are very good.  I liked the way it was intense and overwhelmed my taste buds with good flavor.  It was very enjoyable.  Five Guys has a very good assortment of flavors.  The fries are extremely tasty.  I like the way the fries have a peanut-y flavor, the saltiness and the crispiness.  The hot dogs are pretty good. I like being able to see how well done or how rare they are.    The service is excellent.  The staff were very friendly and were smiling a lot.  They leave out peanuts for you to eat while you are waiting.  However, the bathrooms are not very clean.  It is so loud in the restaurant that it is hard to hear yourself think.  I suggest getting the salted caramel milkshake with whipped cream, the fries and a hot dog (with the bun).

Comments: It seems odd to review the atmosphere of a fast food restaurant.  Ambiance is not exactly the reason you are there.  The decor in Five Guys is surprisingly bright and cheerful.  The white and red tile and the stainless steel kitchen with the grey of the floors give it a very contemporary feel.  I enjoy seeing the magazine articles about 5 guys.  My favorite is the white board that told us that our potatoes were from C & E in St. Anthony’s, Idaho. The music was way too loud.

It must be hard to keep a restaurant clean when people are constantly shelling peanuts.  The floor is the perfect shade of gray for concealing the normal dirt of foot traffic.  The bathroom was somewhat clean.  The men’s room did not have a diaper changing station, but the women’s room did.  Someone did come out and sweep the floor while we were eating.  The counters and the food prep area seemed quite clean. Big baby reports that the men’s room was not as clean and that the floor was as slippery as an ice skating rink.

The peanuts are roasted and salted in the shell.  They are quite addicting actually.  When your number is called, you are handed a bag containing your food order.  We got the milkshake before the food.  Extra points to the young man who asked if we wanted to wait until our food was ready.  Sandwiches are wrapped in foil paper, and the fries are placed in a paper cup inside the paper bag.  More fries are added to the top.  The hot dog is sliced and cooked on the grill.  They serve Hebrew National hot dogs.  My burger arrived without the tomato, and the lettuce looked a little sad, but the burger was not bad.  I did not tell them they forgot the tomato.   The real winner, in our opinion, is the french fries.  They are delicious. The perfect combination of salty, crispy and tender.  The fries portions are quite substantial.  Our little fries was too big for us to finish, as delicious as they were.  I thought the salted caramel milkshake was a little too sweet.

I was impressed by the team at the Vauxhall Five Guys.  They were cheerful, friendly, courteous and thoughtful.

*3:30 PM is normal grill cleaning time, so be forewarned.

If anyone in your party has a peanut allergy, please be aware that there peanuts EVERYWHERE.  The fries are cooked in peanut oil and there are bins of peanuts in the shell for customers to munch on while they wait for their food.

Come back next week for our review of 88 Cafe in Livingston, NJ!
